I recently bought a Savage 12 lrpv ss in 308. I am planning on using this gun for deer and antelope hunting in Wyoming. I really don't have a clue as to what scope I should put on it. I would like to do this as soon as I can to get some practice in with the new set up. My goal is to take an antelope out past 400 yrds with it.
I currently have two Hawke optics scopes an Endurance 30 3-12x50 and a Side winder 4-16x50 on a couple of .223's. I know that they aren't highly thought of on this site but mine have served their purpose for about 4 years and I have been able to shoot coyotes out to 290 yrds with them and can see pretty well with them.
My problem is that you have to spend about 5 times the money to get a big difference in clarity and brightness. The Hawkes were both in the $300.00 range. I have looked through everything that the Bass pro, Gander and Cabelas in the area has to offer and can't seem to find anything I like that much better until I get over the $1000.00 mark.
I currently have about an $800.00 max budget to get this new optic mounted on the gun. That can change with time, but it puts me in a time crunch for figuring out what it will shoot and where, and a lot of practice time.
So finally, the question is, can I get something that is much better than the scopes I have currently, without spending $1500.00
