You could always chase the threads with a thread die. I don't know what size threads are on that scope, but I would imagine it's a metric thread in the neighborhood of an M16 - M20 thread diameter. Any chance you have or have access to some thread pitch gauges? If so, lay the thread pitch gage in the thread grooves to measure your pitch, then measure the outside diameter of the thread with a pair of calipers. Or drop by a machine shop and they should be able to tell you what size thread it is. Then either call around to machine shops to see if they have that size thread die or order a thread die. They can generally be had for $15 - $20 or so, which is kinda expensive for single use, but that should fix it unless the threads in your cap are also stripped.

If you can measure the outside diameter of your threads, I can tell you the most probable thread size you have, but you will need to verify the thread pitch to be certain.
